Choosing the right material

Which sheet materials each process can handle, what each is good for, and which combinations the studio refuses for safety or physics.

Choose the material with nothing selected, in Material on the right. The process and material are checked together.

Material Good for Processes
Plywood 3 mm Boxes, signs, organizers Laser
MDF 3 mm Painted signs, templates, jigs Laser
Acrylic 3 mm Signs, displays, crisp edges Laser
Cardstock 300 gsm Cards, boxes, layered paper signs Cricut / Silhouette, printing, laser
Paper 120 gsm Printable templates, patterns Printing, Cricut / Silhouette
Adhesive vinyl Decals, stickers, labels Vinyl cutter
Heat-transfer vinyl Iron-on designs for fabric Vinyl cutter (mirrored)
Veg-tan leather 2 mm Tags, coasters, patches Laser

Refused combinations

  • Vinyl on a laser is refused: PVC releases harmful fumes when lasered.
  • Wood and acrylic on a craft cutter or vinyl cutter are refused: the blade cannot cut them.
  • Sheets thicker than the process allows — about 2.5 mm for Cricut / Silhouette, about 1 mm for vinyl cutters — are flagged.
Material ids in the files

The material label and the thickness used for joints are written into the README, the assembly guide and the validation report, so a file can always be matched to the sheet it was designed for.
