Understanding scale and measurement

How DIYCutLab keeps true size from design to file to machine, and how to verify the scale at each step.

Scale problems almost always happen when a file is opened, not when it is designed. These checks catch them.

In the studio

Sizes are millimetres (or inches if you switched units). The status bar shows the canvas size, and selected objects show their size under the selection.

In the files

  • SVG declares its width and height in millimetres with a matching viewBox.
  • DXF declares millimetre units ($INSUNITS = 4).
  • PDF pages are the exact sheet size, with a 100 mm check ruler.
  • The README and instructions list every part with its width and height.

On your machine

  1. Import the file without "fit to page" or "scale to bed" options.
  2. Pick one part from the part list and measure it in your machine software.
  3. For printing, measure the 100 mm ruler on the paper.

If any of these do not match, see SVG imports at the wrong size or PDF not printing at actual size.
