Choosing a text mode for signs

Raised, engraved or stencil lettering — what each produces, when to use it, and why some text is refused.

The layered name sign component offers three text modes. In your own designs you get the same results by choosing the text's layer.

Mode What is cut When to use
Raised letters Letters are separate parts glued on top; counters cut out Bold, two-tone signs; connected script fonts become one piece per word
Engraved Letter outlines on the engrave layer (scored or drawn on cutters) Subtle look, no loose pieces
Stencil (cut-through) Letters are holes in the top layer Only text without enclosed counters, or with bridges

Rules the check applies

  • Letters that do not fit are scaled down and you are told; below 4 mm cap height the design is refused.
  • Raised pieces smaller than 4 mm are flagged; below 1.5 mm they block export.
  • Stencil text with closed counters (O, A, B, D, P, Q, R) would drop the centres, so it needs bridges or another mode.
  • All fonts are open-licensed and their license texts are included in your download.
