Printed templates are the fastest way to try a shape before cutting wood or fabric. This tutorial makes a simple tag template you can print, cut and trace.
What you will learn
- The layers a printable template uses: cut lines, fold lines, artwork.
- Adding holes and printed text.
- Where the true-scale PDF is and how to print it correctly.
After the tutorial
Print at Actual size / 100 % and measure the check ruler before cutting. See printing at actual size.
Steps
The same steps appear in the studio, where each one is checked against your design.
- 1
Check the process
This canvas is set up for Home printing on A4. With nothing selected the right panel shows the Paper; switch to US Letter if you need it.
- 2
Draw the outline
In Create, click Rounded under Quick add, then set its Width and Height in Properties. It sits on the Cut lines layer — these are the lines you cut with scissors.
- 3
Add holes
Choose the Hole tool (O) and click inside the outline to add a hole, or two. Holes must sit inside the outline.
- 4
Add a label
Add Text, then set its Layer to Artwork so it is printed rather than cut. Use Cap height to set the letter size.
- 5
Check it
Open Check & output. Your template should validate; the files list shows the 1:1 PDF and tiled PDF.
- 6
See the files
Click Generate files and go to the Files step. You will print cut-sheets-1to1.pdf at 100 % and measure the 100 mm ruler.
Final result
Compiled by the same engine as the studio: 1 part on 1 sheet. Red is cut, black is engraved.
